| Along the back of the great hall stood four large hourglasses. These hourglasses all had different coloured sand. A red one, a yellow one, a green one and a blue one.
These four hourglasses were no doubt the hourglasses that show how many house points each house had.
All of the sand was piled in the top half of the hourglass as it was the beginning of term. The sand was shaking, ready to fall through when one of the houses gained housepoints.
The four hourglasses waited eagerly for teachers, heads or prefects to come and give a house some points.
